In Focus: The Canal Canter

The Canal Canter is a great new event for 2019! It was first run in April, headed up by the Canal Trust, with support from us at ARE. After a highly successful first outing we decided we would like to do it again, and so we had a conversation with the lovely folk at the Canal Trust and here we are!

Enter the Canal Canter

So, here’s the low down on the Canal Canter:

  • Starts and finishes at Victoria Quays in Sheffield city centre
  • Five miles of almost entirely flat running
  • Traffic free route
  • Fully marked and marshalled
  • You can run any of the races as a one off, or run three out of four in the year to be eligible for the league (see details below)
  • League and spot prizes on offer at the end of the season

The route:

The race starts at Victoria Quays, on the far side of the lock gate. It heads out along the canal towpath, which is narrow in places and those of you of the taller persuasion may need to watch your heads under a couple of the bridges! It is wonderfully flat and there’s loads of wildlife to look out for if you’ve got energy to spare. At around 1.8 miles (3km) the route heads up the off ramp and over two bridges into the Olympic Legacy Park. Here you will keep right down the slope towards the tram stop, then through the gates onto the Don Valley bowl. Again keep right, make a full loop of the bowl before returning through the same gate and back up the slope. When you get to the top of the hill turn right yet again and follow the path as it curves right to the bollards at Coleridge Road. A sharp turn round the hairpin sees you running down the pavement past the college and then left along the three lane 100m track. At the top of the slope turn left, return to the bridge entrance to the canal to retrace your steps and finish at Victoria Quays!

The League:

You are more than welcome to run just one or two of the races, or enter at least three to be eligible for the league and in with a chance of winning a prize!

  • Keep your number for the whole series so your times can be linked
  • Your fastest three times will be added together, and the men and women with the lowest total times will win a prize
  • Complete all four races to be entered into a raffle to win a spot prize!*

*For 2019 anyone who completes three out of the four races will be entered into the raffle as we appreciate some of you might not even have known about the first event!

The race dates for 2019 are 18th August, 27th October and 15th December. For more details and to enter click here>>
